Book Beginnings Friday: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence.

"Once upon a time and a very good time it was there was a moocow coming down along the road and this moocow that was down along the road met a nicens little boy named baby tuckoo..."

I really like this opening sentence because it is classic stream of consciousness.  It puts me in mind of the opening to The Sound and The Fury which is one of my all-time favorite opening paragraphs of all time.  Just the idea of narration from the perspective of an undeveloped mind excites me!

  3. I so do not remember the book starting that way. I remember the fire and brimstone sermon and the political debates over Sunday dinner, but I don't remember the moocow or tuckoo.

Oh well . . . Joyce is like that. I'm lucky to remember any of it.

  5. I read this book in high school. I remember nothing about it. I suppose I should try it again as an adult to see if it sticks in my memory better. Mine is here and is a whole lot less "stream of consciousness". Enjoy your book!
